We can easily forecast mammoth car fleets in China and India, but how will they be fuelled? We are faced with the scientific uncertainty concerning issues like global warming, desertification and deforestation, oil and gas depletion, livestock and plant disease proliferation, depletion of the ozone layer, and species extinction among others.
We are confronted with an overwhelming responsibility in attempting to reconcile the demands for human fulfillment and buoyant economic activity with the pressing need to ensure environmental and resource sustainability and global ecological equilibrium. More than ever before in the history of mankind, civilization is under high pressure to wisely allocate depleting resources, renew resource stocks and flows, limit the pollution of land, air, and water, conserve species and natural environments, and reduce or reverse harmful climatic change. In brief, good stewardship of the planet, from its oceans, forests, plains to the upper atmosphere, and including human habitats from fields and factories to cities and recreational spaces.
